Aston Villa manager, Unai Emery, has addressed the ongoing rumours surrounding Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz’s potential move to Arsenal in the upcoming January transfer window. Amidst Arsenal’s search for midfield reinforcements, especially with Thomas Partey facing recurring injury concerns this season, speculations linking Luiz to the Gunners have resurfaced.

Following Aston Villa’s 2-1 triumph over Tottenham, catapulting them into the top four, Emery took the opportunity to weigh in on the club’s standing in the league. Despite their recent successes, Emery believes there are seven superior contenders for top league positions compared to Aston Villa.

“In terms of the top seven positions, there are seven teams more in contention than us,” Emery stated, pinpointing Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Newcastle as the leading contenders. Despite this, he expressed satisfaction with Villa’s current position and emphasised the importance of maintaining focus across the remaining matches.

Emery emphasised the significance of retaining Douglas Luiz, despite reported interest from Arsenal. “He is a crucial player and content here, so naturally, we aim to retain him,” affirmed Emery, dismissing the possibility of Luiz departing in January.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Luiz dates back to last summer transfer window, with Villa rejecting multiple bids from the Gunners. Arsenal views Luiz as an instrumental figure capable of bolstering the squad, potentially enhancing their bid for a Premier League title, having previously fallen short to Manchester City.

The Brazilian midfielder’s stature in the Premier League has notably flourished under Emery’s guidance, earning praise for his versatility and goal-scoring prowess. Despite Arsenal’s interest, Villa remains steadfast in their reluctance to part ways with Luiz, with reports suggesting a substantial offer would be required to even consider a mid-season transfer.

In addition to Luiz, Arsenal have also been linked with Real Sociedad midfielder, Martin Zubimendi, as part of the quest to reinforce the midfield.
