Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal has been praised for their impressive talent identification and recruitment under the Spaniard’s tenure, but one promising transfer they made in 2022 is set to backfire.

Brazilian winger, Marquinhos, was signed in June 2022 from São Paulo and after scoring just two goals in 33 appearances, signing him less than a year after his professional debut would always be a risky move for the north London side. However, Arsenal, and Edu Gaspar in particular, clearly saw something in the Brazilian, as Wolverhampton Wanderers claim he was signed after they agreed a pre-contract agreement with the teenager.

The Gunners’ pursuit of the winger left Rogério Ceni, who was enjoying his second stint at São Paulo, reportedly left the manager ‘furious’. Ceni was left frustrated with the Brazilian outfit as Marquinhos was in his plans for next summer, and the bid put forward by the English side didn’t align with the player’s potential to improve in the future.

In fact, Ceni was left so angry that he adopted a new policy at the club and he refused to give opportunities to players on short-term contracts who used the club as a stepping-stone.

After two unsuccessful loan moves to Norwich City and Nantes, the winger has now returned from the latter to the Sobha Realty Training Centre, formerly named London Colney. However, with the wingers Arsenal have to their disposal as they push for a title charge, Marquinhos has no obvious pathway into the first-team currently.

With that said, the renowned Fabrizio Romano has reported that Arsenal and Brazilian side, Fluminense have agreed on a loan deal with an option to buy for the Brazilians, despite an unreported fee. The winger himself has already accepted the offer, as he seeks the gametime he requires at his tender age.

With both players being signed as teenagers from Brazilian outfits, Arsenal were hoping that Marquinhos could emulate the impressive showings of Gabriel Martinelli, but it looks unlikely at this point.
