Prolific Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema who holds the record for the most goals in the Women’s Super League (WSL), is set to bid adieu to Arsenal at the end of the current season.

Miedema’s departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter at the club, where she has left an indelible mark since her arrival in 2017 from Bayern Munich.

The 27-year-old Dutch forward has been a formidable force on the field, amassing an impressive tally of 125 goals in 172 appearances during her tenure with the Gunners. Within the WSL, Miedema’s prowess has been particularly striking, netting an astounding 79 goals and clinching the coveted Golden Boot award twice.

Her contributions were key in Arsenal’s triumph in securing the WSL title in 2019, in addition to clinching three Women’s League Cups during her tenure in North London.

As the season draws to a close, Miedema’s impending free agency has sparked speculation, with reports suggesting that Manchester City are among the clubs vying for her signature. Despite struggling with an ACL injury earlier in the season, Miedema made a commendable return to the pitch, featuring in 13 appearances for Arsenal.

Expressing gratitude for Miedema’s contributions, Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar commended her exceptional performances, acknowledging her instrumental role in the team’s success over the years. Gaspar conveyed the club’s well wishes for Miedema’s future endeavors, emphasising the lasting impact she has had on Arsenal’s legacy.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we thank Viv for her huge contribution towards the success of the team during her seven years with us.

“Viv’s goals and overall performances as an Arsenal player have been of the highest quality, and she has created so many wonderful memories for us over the years. We wish Viv and her family the best of health and happiness for the future.”

With Arsenal’s final WSL fixture against Brighton scheduled for May 18, the club are out of contention for the title, trailing behind leaders Manchester City by five points. Clare Wheatley, Arsenal director of women’s football, echoed sentiments of appreciation for Miedema, highlighting her profound connection with the club’s supporters and reminiscing on her illustrious tenure.

“Since joining us in 2017, Viv has taken on a special place in the hearts of our supporters, who I’m sure will have many fond memories of her time at Arsenal. Viv leaves with our best wishes for the future after seven memorable years here.”
