Arsenal are preparing for the potential departure of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, with plans for his replacement already in motion. Ramsdale, who has found himself on the bench since the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford, is reportedly seeking first-team football opportunities elsewhere, with Newcastle United emerging as frontrunners for his signature.

The English goalkeeper, who played a key role in Arsenal’s second-place finish in the Premier League last season, has seen his fortunes change following Raya’s arrival. Serving as the understudy to the Spanish goalkeeper this season, Ramsdale has made just 12 appearances, accumulating a total of 931 minutes on the pitch. Frustrated by his limited playing time, Ramsdale is keen to secure a starting role and is open to a move in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Newcastle, looking to bolster their squad and inject youth into their goalkeeping department, views Ramsdale as an ideal candidate to succeed aging keepers Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka. Manager Eddie Howe, who previously worked with Ramsdale at Bournemouth, has expressed admiration for the goalkeeper and is keen on a reunion.

Ramsdale’s potential departure has prompted Arsenal to explore replacement options, with former Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny topping the list of candidates. Additionally, Brighton’s Jason Steele and Ajax’s Diant Ramaj are also under consideration as Arsenal seek to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks.

The introduction of Raya was intended to create healthy competition within the squad, but Mikel Arteta’s preference for his compatriot and Ramsdale’s desire for regular game time has shifted the dynamics. With Raya now firmly established as the first-choice goalkeeper, Ramsdale’s departure seems increasingly likely, paving the way for a new chapter in Arsenal’s goalkeeping department.

Arteta praised Ramsdale for not hiding after the error against Brentford in March and says he has a big personality.

“He did exactly what he is which is a person with huge personality and courage. Errors are part of football. It’s how you react to it and he did so in an amazing way. I’m not surprised. We really wanted to win for him.”
