Arsenal are still awaiting their first signing of the winter transfer window with only five days left before the window is shut. But it seems Mikel Arteta and Edu are working towards long-term targets who are only going to be available in the summer.

According to reports from Germany, Bayern Munich have joined the race to sign Real Sociedad’s highly sought-after midfielder, Martin Zubimendi. The midfielder is reportedly a summer target for Arsenal and reports in Munich says both clubs are in contention for the Spaniard.

Last year, Arsenal attempted to sign Zubimendi but a deal could not be struck, leading them to redirect the bulk of their summer budget toward the £105 million deal for Declan Rice. Bayern Munich, on the other hand, faced disappointment in their pursuit of Joao Palhinha from Fulham but are actively seeking a central midfielder in the upcoming transfer window.

According to Tobi Altschäffl on Bild’s Bayern Insider podcast, Mikel Arteta has spoken to the talented midfielder who is said to be open to a move to the Premier League club.

Zubimendi, recognised as one of La Liga’s standout deep-lying midfielders, has a release clause of £51 million in his contract with Real Sociedad.

Recent reports from Nacional in Spain indicate a significant development in the transfer saga, suggesting that Zubimendi has chosen Arsenal as his next destination. The report delves into Real Sociedad’s preparations for his departure, revealing the club’s active pursuit of a replacement for the midfielder.

Despite initial reluctance on Zubimendi’s part to leave at the start of the season, the club are reportedly acknowledging the likelihood of losing one of their key assets. Arsenal’s bid gained further momentum as the player reportedly turned down a move to Barcelona, making the Gunners the preferred option over their competitors.

The 24-year-old has been a linchpin for Real Sociedad this season, featuring in 30 appearances across all competitions and netting four goals.
