Former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has disclosed that Karim Benzema was on the verge of signing for Arsenal before a last-minute change of heart altered their plans.

The Uruguayan striker shared details of the transfer saga, shedding light on how the Spanish giants, Real Madrid, had initially earmarked him for a move to bolster their forward line.

Suarez, fresh off an impressive season with Liverpool where he scored 31 goals and provided 17 assists in just 33 Premier League appearances, was a prime target for Real Madrid. In an effort to secure funds for Suarez’s acquisition, Real Madrid had put Benzema up for sale, and Arsenal were reportedly close to finalising a deal for the French striker.

Speaking to DelSol, Suarez revealed the intricate details of the almost-complete transfer: “Before the 2014 World Cup, Real Madrid wanted to sign me, and everything was on track. They were planning to sell Benzema to Arsenal; it was all done. When the World Cup started, Barca joined the race, and obviously I preferred Barca. With the bite situation, Madrid lowered their interest, and Barca became more interested… In the end, I had both options, and I chose Barca because it was my dream.”

Ultimately, Benzema remained at the Santiago Bernabeu, leading to the collapse of Suarez’s potential move to Madrid. Suarez, instead, made a move to Clasico rivals Barcelona.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, at the time, revealed the challenges in securing Benzema’s signature. He stated, “That’s part of the fact you need three agreements for anybody. It’s true that it is sometimes connected with other clubs. But we have to accept that.”

Wenger, in his post-retirement reflections, acknowledged Arsenal’s interest in taking advantage of Benzema’s limited game time at Real Madrid. Regarding attempts to sign Benzema, Wenger commented, “Yes, because he was in competition with Higuain for a while. He played the game based on passing and connections, so he was an ideal player up front.”

Despite the unsuccessful pursuit during Wenger’s tenure, Arsenal’s links with Benzema persisted. Recent reports indicate that Arsenal expressed interest in January as Benzema sought a move away from Saudi side Al-Ittihad. The 36-year-old striker, who has made 20 appearances and scored 12 goals for Al-Ittihad this season, is under contract until the summer of 2026.

It is worth noting that Arsenal also tried to sign Suarez from Liverpool during Wenger’s managerial stint, bidding £1 over his £40 million release clause. However, the audacious attempt drew ridicule from Liverpool’s owner, John Henry.
