Arsenal youngster Marquinhos, who was once tipped to be the next Gabriel Martinelli, is set to leave the club after just two years following disappointing loan spells.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Norwich City, but amassed just two goal involvements in his 11 appearances for the Canaries, before being sent back out on loan for the first half of the 2023/24 season, at French outfit Nantes.

In Ligue 1 this season, the young Brazilian started just a single game and failed to score or assist in his seven appearances for the club, with his loan being cut short in January after a disastrous half of a season.

Despite the promise that he offered after joining the club from Sao Paulo in 2022, Marquinhos is now set for a return to his home nation, where Simon Collings reports that he will join Fluminense on loan with an option to buy, dependent on certain clauses.

When he arrived in North London, many fans had hoped that Marquinhos would offer the ability for Bukayo Saka to be rotated, though his underwhelming development has since been attributed to Saka’s constant use, and subsequent fatigue.

Having joined the Gunners for just £3m, the club do not stand to lose out financially on the youngster, with his signing seen as a low-risk option at the time.

As well as Simon Collings, Fabrizio Romano also confirmed that the deal is at an advanced stage, saying: “Marquinhos is set to leave Arsenal on loan with Fluminense also having the option to buy him permanently.

“Fluminense wanted that and the buy option clause should be there. The value is one of the final details discussed between clubs in order to complete the agreement soon.

“Marquinhos has already accepted the destination.”
