In a recent episode of ‘The Here We Go Podcast’, Fabrizio Romano delved into the potential transfer of Bayern Munich defender Mattijs de Ligt who has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer.

Arsenal had a relatively quiet transfer window and this are expected to heat up ahead of the summer transfer window. Romano suggests that the club’s apparent inactivity may not necessarily indicate a lack of success. With the challenges of finding value mid-season, avoiding impulsive spending can often be a prudent strategy, particularly considering the impending return of key players like Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey, who are set to bolster the squad significantly.

However, Romano highlights that despite the positive trajectory, Arsenal still find themselves in need of reinforcements, particularly in the central defensive department. Recent reports have pointed towards Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt as a potential solution to this issue, with Romano indicating that the Dutch defender may be open to a move away from the Bundesliga side in the summer.

Romano referenced comments from Bayern’s sporting director, Christopher Freund, who acknowledged de Ligt’s dissatisfaction with his current situation at the club.

The journalist revealed that interest in de Ligt extends beyond England, with Paris Saint-Germain also expressing a desire to negotiate for the player’s services in the January window, albeit unsuccessfully.

Romano said: “I think it’s really important what the director of Bayern Munich said today, Christopher Freund while they were preparing for the game against Lazio.

“Because he confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt is not happy with the current situation.

“Lets see what’s going to happen there in the summer because there is interest from England and not only England, but for example Paris Saint-Germain tried to start a negotiation with Matthijs de Ligt in January.

“It was not possible because Bayern were not going to sell him in the January window.

“In the summer it could be different, so keep an eye on Matthijs de Ligt because his current situation at Bayern is not so easy.”

Should de Ligt become available in the summer, Romano believes Arsenal could seize the opportunity to strengthen their defensive line, providing much-needed competition for William Saliba at center-back. With Ben White predominantly deployed on the right side of defense, the addition of a quality central defender appears imperative, particularly when compared to the depth available at rival clubs like Manchester City.
