Charlie Patino was expected to leave Arsenal on a permanent basis this summer with the hope of getting more regular first-team minutes during the 2023/24 campaign. However after a meeting with Mikel Arteta last week, the plan has changed and the player no longer wants to leave the club permanently ahead of next season.
As per Fabrizio Romano, Charlie Patino has agreed a one-year loan deal with Championship side Swansea City, with no option/obligation to buy. The player will return to North London come the end of the season. Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player and never wanted him to leave permanently this summer.
It now appears the Arsenal boss has managed to persuade the 19-year-old to stay on at Arsenal with a route into the first-team the plan for the English midfielder once he returns from his loan spell at the end of the season. The Arsenal boss likely explained to Charlie Patino that Jorginho, Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey aren’t getting any younger and he will have a pathway into the first-team as long as he sticks around and continues to develop at the rate he is.
The Arsenal youngster enjoyed life in the Championship last season. Patino made 34 appearances for Blackpool during his loan spell, scoring two goals and recording four assists. However Swansea City is seen as a step up from Blackpool with the club expected to fight for the play-offs during the 2023/24 campaign.
Although Blackpool did finish 23rd and were relegated to League One, the 19-year-old was a bright spark in an underperforming team and playing that many games at such a young age will only benefit him moving forward. Another loan spell in a league he knows very well is seen as a great move for the youngster.
Charlie Patino signed his first professional contract with Arsenal in 2021 and the player is regarded as one of the clubs top prospects with the expectation that he will eventually break into the first-team one day and become one of Mikel Arteta’s main players.
Arsenal recently activated a two-year option in Patino’s contract, keeping the playmaker tied to the club until the end of 2024/25. Charlie Patino has recently been training at London Colney ahead of the new season, however his move to Swansea is expected to be announced this week after the two clubs agreed a deal.
