Arsenal winger Marquinhos may be on his way back to Brazil on loan this month. Recent reports from Brazil suggest that Fluminense are engaged in negotiations with Arsenal regarding a potential loan deal for 20-year-old winger Marquinhos. The proposed arrangement could include a purchase option at the end of the current season.

Marquinhos, who was recalled from his loan spell at French side Nantes earlier this month, is currently representing Brazil’s under-23 team in the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament in Venezuela.

Despite expressing his focus on performing well in the tournament and returning to Arsenal for the second half of the campaign, there are indications that the winger might have different plans.

In an interview with local press ahead of the competition, Marquinhos shared his intentions, saying, “I’m very focused on having a great Pre-Olympic [tournament], to return to Arsenal confident, to continue the work there, and God willing, to be at the next Olympics.” He emphasised the significance of representing the national team and discussed his dream of qualifying for the upcoming Olympics.

The young winger, signed by the Gunners from Sao Paulo in the summer of 2022, made an immediate impact with a goal and assist on his Europa League debut. However being considered a prospect for the future, Marquinhos has struggled for regular playing time over the past 12 months, spending time on loan with Nantes and Championship side Norwich.

Also with aspirations of participating in the Paris Olympics, a tournament that would impact his involvement in a significant portion of pre-season training, Marquinhos appears keen on securing more playing time. The potential loan move to Fluminense, his home country club, could provide him with familiar surroundings to regain form and confidence.

While the exact deadline for the deal remains unclear, it’s noteworthy that the transfer window in Brazil is open until March 7.

Marquinhos will be in action on February 5 when Brazil begins the second group stage of the Pre-Olympic tournament. Qualification for Paris 2024 is at stake, with only two of the remaining four teams securing a spot in the prestigious event.
