Barcelona are reportedly prepared to part ways with midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong to facilitate the acquisition of a high-calibre pivot for the upcoming season.

With the summer transfer window looming, Barcelona are already mapping out plans for a significant overhaul following a lackluster season. The Catalan club are gearing up for changes both in the managerial hierarchy and within the squad, aiming to address key areas of concern.

At the forefront of Barcelona’s agenda is the resolution of the managerial situation, with indications pointing towards Xavi’s potential continuation beyond the current season. However, the primary focus lies on squad restructuring, particularly in acquiring a top-class pivot and reinforcing the left-wing position.

According to sources at SPORT, Barcelona are willing to sacrifice De Jong, who has garnered interest from top clubs in the Premier League, PSG, and Bayern Munich. Despite the Dutch midfielder’s contentment at Barcelona and a long-term contract until 2026, the club is determined to proceed with the potential transfer for both financial and sporting reasons.

De Jong’s performances this season have failed to meet expectations, compounded by injury setbacks and an overcrowded midfield roster. Barcelona’s previous attempts to offload De Jong in 2022 were unsuccessful, highlighting the challenges they may face in persuading him to depart this summer.

Should De Jong opt to stay, Barcelona would be compelled to pursue a pivot midfielder of lesser stature, compromising their ambition for a top-level reinforcement. Additionally, the incoming midfielder would be expected to assume the starting role in the No. 6 position, as De Jong’s suitability for the role is questioned by the club.

Mikel Arteta is looking to improve the quality of the Arsenal squad next season, and the club will most likely seize the opportunity to sign a midfielder of De Jong’s caliber if it presents itself to the club.
