Unai Emery’s Aston Villa may launch a bid for Villarreal winger, Álex Baena, who has recently been scouted by North London club, Arsenal.

Baena joined the ‘Yellow Submarines’ in 2011, at just 10 years of age, and has recorded 54 appearances for the LaLiga outfit, and has earned his first and only cap for the Spanish national team.

The winger enjoyed one season away from Villareal whilst on loan at Girona during the 21/22 season, where Baena was an instrumental part of the Blanquivermells’ promotion into LaLiga. Since his return, Baena has established himself as a regular starter for Villareal and the Spaniard signed a new deal at Estadi de la Ceràmica, seeing him tied to the club until 2028.

During Arsenal’s pursuit of now Chelsea player, Mykhailo Mudryk, Baena was identified by Arteta and Arsenal as a cheaper alternative to the Ukrainian. Despite opting for former-Seagull, Leandro Trossard, the Gunners have kept tabs on Álex Baena as a potential signing in future windows.

However, Arteta’s fellow Spaniard and predecessor to the Arsenal job, Unai Emery, is also interested in his ex-player. The pair worked together under Emery’s two-year stint in Villarreal, and a reunion may be on the cards in Birmingham.

90min have claimed that Aston Villa “are ready to step up their interest” for the youngster, and a move to the Villans could come as soon as the upcoming January transfer window. Although Baena usually occupies the left-wing, the attacker can also play on the right and down the middle of the pitch, which could appeal to Aston Villa as they challenge for a Champions League spot and continue to progress in the Conference League.

The two clubs are not alone in the pursuit for Baena, and Liverpool and Manchester City are both interested in activating the Spaniard’s  £51million release clause on his current contract.
