The January transfer window shut on the 1st February but Arsenal can still do business, with Brazilian winger Marquinhos recently recalled from Nantes and linked with a return to his native country.

The saga surrounding Marquinhos’ potential loan move from Arsenal appears to be reaching its conclusion, with Fluminense emerging as the frontrunners for his signature.

According to journalist Jorge Nicola, Fluminense is leading the race for the Brazilian midfielder, with negotiations reportedly being accelerated by manager Fernando Diniz’s involvement.

Marquinhos joined Arsenal in 2021 and announced himself by scoring a fine goal on his Gunners debut, a 2-1 Europa League win over FC Zurich back in September 2022, having signed from Sao Paulo the previous summer.

Before arriving in England, Marquinhos had a year’s experience with his hometown club, having made his senior debut soon after his 18th birthday, helping his side win the Sao Paulo State Championship in 2021.

Last summer, the midfielder was sent out on loan to French club Nantes but was recalled by the Gunners in January, just before he reported for International duty with Brazil.

With Mikel Arteta not having the Brazilian in his immediate squad plans, he may well stay in his country, with the winter transfer window opening in a few weeks time.

While Corinthians had also expressed interest in Marquinhos, it seems that Fluminense is set to secure his services.

With most European transfer windows now closed, the options for a winter move back to Fluminense is the only alternative for the player and the club who openly pledged support for his continued development.

Per multiple reports in Brazil,  Marquinhos’ loan deal with Fluminense is close to completion with few left-over details to be ironed out once Brazil’s U-23 squad concludes its participation at the pre-Olympic tournament.
