Ahead of the summer transfer window, Arsenal are closely monitoring Athletic Bilbao winger, Nico Williams. Mikel Arteta has recognised the reliance on the fitness of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli and is keen on fortifying the team’s attacking lineup for next season.

The Mirror reports that Williams has captured Arsenal’s attention with his impressive performances in the Bilbao shirt this season. The 21-year-old, who has already earned 11 caps for Spain, boasts three goals and six assists in LaLiga, contributing significantly to Athletic Bilbao’s journey to the Copa del Rey semi-finals with five goal involvements.

Having scored 26 goals and provided 29 assists in 136 appearances for the La Liga side, Williams was awarded with a new contract last year, meaning, Arsenal will need to dig deep financially if they are serious about signing the winger.

The Gunners are not alone in the race for the player, with competition coming from Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Aston Villa, all reportedly interested in securing Williams’ services.

The pursuit of a new winger forms a part of Arsenal’s planned summer shake-up, which may witness the departure of prominent names like Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe, and Eddie Nketiah. In addition to Williams, Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi are being considered as potential replacements.

“Arsenal scouts have been making checks on Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams,” states the article. “The Gunners have a winger on their transfer hit-list this summer as they look to strengthen their squad again. They have also been long-term admirers of Wolves winger Pedro Neto, who is already proven in the Premier League.

“Spain international Williams, 21, signed a new contract last year, so he would not be cheap, and Arsenal have not been the only club making checks as Real Madrid, Aston Villa, and Liverpool have also been linked with him. Athletic Bilbao has been insistent that they will not sell Williams, and the player will also show his loyalty.

“The Gunners have been keen to get back-up for Bukayo Saka and more attacking options to ease the pressure on the England winger. Arsenal could be ready for a shake-up this summer, with Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe, and Eddie Nketiah all possible big-name departures.”
