Could another Manchester City player be on his way to Arsenal this summer after Pep Guardiola told Joao Cancelo his time in Manchester is over…

Joao Cancelo was seen as a key part of the Manchester City side that won the league title in 2021/22, however two years on and he’s now expected to move on in a permanent deal come the end of the season.

The Portuguese defender reportedly fell out with manager Pep Guardiola at the end of 2022, which lead to him being loaned out to Bayern Munich for the remainder of last season.

This season Joao Cancelo is playing his football in Spain with FC Barcelona where he has been a constant starter under Xavi. The man on loan from Manchester City has made 24 appearances in the league, while also featuring eight times in the Champions League.

According to The Sun on Sunday, Barcelona have the option to make Cancelo’s move permanent for £40million. However, the Spanish giants don’t have the financial capabilities to pull off the transfer this season which has lead to Arsenal being alert to the situation.

It’s well known Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player after their time together in Manchester. The Gunners even tried to sign Cancelo last summer, before he opted to join Barcelona instead and Arsenal’s interest hasn’t gone away.

Arsenal are now viewed by Manchester City as a direct rival so it’s currently unclear whether they’d be willing to do business with the Gunners again, following the transfers of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko at the beginning of last season. But that won’t stop Edu and Mikel Arteta from trying.

Joao Cancelo’s versatility is one of his best assets with the player featuring regularly in both full-back roles throughout his career. Due to the constant injury problems to Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu, it’s no surprise Mikel Arteta is looking at signing another defender ahead of next season.

The 29-year-old is Premier League proven and a highly experienced player, which some might say Arsenal’s young team is lacking at this current moment. There’s no doubt Cancelo would improve Mikel Arteta’s options if the player was to move to North London in the summer.
