Arsenal are reportedly gearing up to secure a replacement for Eddie Nketiah, and they may have found their top candidate in a young talent who could potentially address the team’s forward concerns.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal have communicated to Bologna their readiness to pay over £40 million for the signature of Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee this summer.

The 22-year-old Netherlands international joined Bologna last year and is currently in his second season with the club, having tallied eight goals and four assists in 22 appearances for Thiago Motta’s side this season.

Zirkzee’s outstanding performances have drawn interest from several top European clubs. Reports suggest that his former club Bayern Munich may consider activating the £40 million buy-back clause in his contract.

Additionally, Arsenal are reportedly set to make an approach for him at the end of this season, facing potential competition from Manchester United, who also admire the young striker.

If Zirkzee joins Arsenal, it could mark the end of Nketiah’s association with the club. Despite having Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as frontline options, the Brazilian has been injury-prone and Nketiah is not always the first-choice pick for Mikel Arteta.

Nketiah has typically started games when Jesus has been sidelined, but his recent omission in favour of Leandro Trossard to lead the line against Liverpool suggests that a new striker signing could lead to Nketiah’s departure.

While Zirkzee may not be a complete player, the Dutchman has made significant strides with Bologna this term, contributing 12 goals in 22 games and showcasing potential. He excels in anchor and link-up play, possesses good pace, and can dribble past opponents. Moreover, his aerial presence could address a current deficiency in Arsenal’s attacking lineup.

While fans might lean towards options like Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen to compete with Jesus, the manager might opt for Zirkzee instead.
