According to reports in Holland, Arsenal are on the verge of securing their first signing of the January transfer window. The Gunners are in the market for a defensive signing next month following the mini-injury crisis Mikel Arteta is currently having to deal with.

The Arsenal manager currently only has five defenders available with Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu all out with injuries. Arteta is determined to strengthen his squad in the upcoming transfer window to make sure his side don’t make the same mistakes as last season, when they lost William Saliba to injury.

Jorrel Hato is a 17-year-old promising young talent from Ajax who mainly operates as a centre-back, but can play at left-back as well.

Voetbal International reports that Arsenal are in talks to sign Hato, who has been a standout performer for Ajax in the Eredivisie this season. The teenager’s versatility, capable of playing both left-back and centre-back, has not gone unnoticed. Additionally, Hato made his senior debut for the Netherlands national team in November during a match against Gibraltar.

Hato, who holds the record as the youngest captain in Ajax’s history, recently took the armband at the age of 17 during a 2-2 draw with Almere City. Arsenal’s interest in the young talent has been ongoing, and it appears that the Gunners are now ready to make a move, having opted for Jurrien Timber in the summer.

Timber, another Ajax wonderkid, joined Arsenal in the previous transfer window but suffered an unfortunate injury on the opening day of the season, limiting his playing time.

Jorrel Hato, aware of Timber’s situation, expressed admiration for his former teammate’s move to Arsenal and revealed his own aspirations, stating, “It is also my dream to one day make such a transfer. But I realize that I still have a very long way to go.”

As Arsenal seeks to lure the Dutch sensation to North London, the prospect of a lucrative contract could be a deciding factor. Hato is currently on youth terms at Ajax, with his contract set to expire in June 2025.

While Ajax are eager to extend his deal, Arsenal may present a tempting offer to secure the young talent’s services and continue their trend of bringing in promising players for the future.
