Arsenal have reportedly added Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins to their list of targets ahead of the January transfer window.

Amid a flurry of potential targets circulating for the Gunners, including the likes of Ivan Toney, Victor Osimhen, and more recently Dominic Solanke, Watkins has emerged as a target for Arsenal’s recruitment strategy.

The competition for Toney has intensified with Chelsea ready to splash huge sums on the Brentford forward while Victor Osimhen has technically ruled himself out of a January move after agreeing to a new contract extension with Napoli. Bournemouth striker Solanke is viewed by many as an underwhelming target with many preferring Eddie Nketiah continue in the team until summer than a move for the former Liverpool man.

Since his move to Villa Park in 2020, the 27-year-old has solidified his position as a vital member of Aston Villa’s starting eleven. However, recent developments under new head coach Unai Emery has seen Watkins elevate his game to new heights.

Impressive performances last season set the stage for his continued excellence this term, with nine goals and eight assists in seventeen league appearances, catching the attention of Arsenal’s scouting team.

Reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes suggest that Arsenal are seriously considering recruiting a new striker in January and has identified Watkins as a prime option for reinforcement.

While Arsenal aims to tempt Watkins with a move to the Emirates Stadium, securing his signature won’t come without its challenges. Aston Villa are determined to retain their prized asset as they aim to establish a squad capable of consistently challenging for European qualification.

Fichajes notes that Arsenal would need to present a significant offer to secure Watkins’ services next year. However, the Gunners’ financial constraints might limit their ability to make substantial acquisitions without first generating funds through player sales.

Transfermarkt values the Villa star at approximately £48 million, highlighting his status as a proven Premier League forward and making him an attractive prospect for Arsenal’s attacking line.

Despite Arsenal’s interest and the potential benefits of Watkins joining their ranks, the likelihood of Aston Villa allowing their star player to depart during the January transfer window seems remote.
