Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt as a potential transfer target, according to recent reports.

The 24-year-old Dutch center-back, who made the switch from Juventus to Bayern in July 2022, has been a prominent figure in Munich, making 54 appearances across various competitions. However, despite adding the end product to his game from the defense with four goals and an assist, speculations about his future with Bayern have begun circulating.

De Ligt’s season has been hindered by injury setbacks, limiting his playing time to a mere 11 appearances under current manager Thomas Tuchel. This circumstance has sparked interest from Arsenal, with sources from The Athletic indicating the London-based club’s keen observation of De Ligt’s situation at Allianz Arena.

While a January transfer seems improbable, Arsenal managerial staff, led by Mikel Arteta and technical director, Edu Gaspar, reportedly holds confidence in the possibility of striking a deal during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Matthijs de Ligt, who emerged through Ajax’s youth system, garnered attention from various clubs before joining Juventus in 2019, followed by his move to Bayern in 2022. His earlier stint at Juventus witnessed 117 appearances, and in the ongoing 2022-23 campaign, he featured prominently 43 times for the German champions.

Arsenal, boasting one of the Premier League’s best defensive records this season alongside Liverpool, with just 16 goals conceded, currently relies on William Saliba and Gabriel as the primary central defenders, both key to the team’s successes this season.

Aside from defensive reinforcement, Arsenal are also eyeing a central midfielder to complement Declan Rice. However, uncertainties loom over the club’s financial capacity for acquisitions in the upcoming transfer window.

The Gunners are set to battle West Ham United in their pursuit to end the year at the top of the Premier League table, before travelling to Craven Cottage to face Fulham on New Year’s Eve.
