Arsenal are gearing up for a midfield overhaul this summer, with Thomas Partey, Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny all in the departure lounge at the Emirates Stadium, it has prompted the Gunners to set their sights on Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana, a player once recommended by former star Cesc Fabregas to Liverpool.

With the impending exits of Partey and Jorginho, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has identified Fofana as a prime target to bolster the midfield ranks. The 25-year-old Frenchman, who has been impressive in Ligue 1, is known for his versatility, capable of thriving in both defensive and attacking midfield roles.

According to reports from French outlet Foot Mercato, Arsenal are among several clubs vying for Fofana’s signature, with Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, and AC Milan also expressing interest. Manchester United is another contender in the race for the midfielder.

Fabregas, who played for Monaco between 2019 to 2022, previously touted Fofana as a suitable addition for Liverpool. While the Reds didn’t pursue the recommendation, Arsenal now appears poised to make a move for the talented midfielder.

“When I came [to Monaco as a player], Thierry (Henry) and Vadim (Vasilyev) also asked me to help grow the young people,” Fabregas said.

“It was an important point. Today, I feel like I have won the respect and sympathy of this younger generation. I hope I have helped. We like each other. I will continue to follow them and exchange with them.

“I would like to see Fofana, (Sofiane) Diop or (Aurelien) Tchouameni at Bayern or Liverpool, The Spaniard told RMC Sport in 2022.”

Monaco are reportedly demanding a minimum of €30 million (£25.7 million) for Fofana, setting the stage for a potential bidding war among interested clubs. Should Arsenal manage to secure a significant fee for Partey’s departure, acquiring Fofana could represent a shrewd investment for Arteta’s side.
