Reports suggest that Arsenal are emerging as the clear frontrunner in the pursuit of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, leaving two European giants trailing behind in the chase for his signature.

Zubimendi, a key figure for Sociedad this season, has featured prominently in 45 matches and has been a constant presence in their Champions League campaign. Despite expressing contentment with his current club, the 25-year-old midfielder appears poised for a potential transfer this summer, as he seeks to test himself at a higher level.

With a €60 million (£52m) release clause in his contract, Zubimendi represents a lucrative prospect for clubs seeking midfield reinforcements. European heavyweights Barcelona and Bayern Munich have expressed interest in the Spanish international, who has earned five caps for his national team.

However, recent reports from Spain suggest that Arsenal have surged ahead in the race to secure Zubimendi’s services. Financial constraints may hinder Barcelona’s ability to meet the release clause without offloading players, providing Arsenal with a window of opportunity to secure a deal.

Zubimendi’s desire to experience the Premier League further strengthens Arsenal’s position, as it remains the most competitive and financially rewarding league globally. A move to England would pit Zubimendi against top midfield talents such as Rodri, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Bruno Guimaraes.

Manager Mikel Arteta’s keen interest in Zubimendi adds another dimension to Arsenal’s pursuit. Arteta views the midfielder as an ideal replacement for Thomas Partey, who is reportedly set to depart this summer. Zubimendi’s comparatively low injury record also appeals to Arsenal, as he typically misses fewer matches due to injury than Partey.

Arteta’s familiarity with Zubimendi, having spent time at Real Sociedad himself, enhances Arsenal’s ability to facilitate the player’s transition to English football. With Arsenal’s pursuit gaining momentum, the Gunners aim to bolster their midfield ranks with the addition of Zubimendi ahead of the upcoming campaign.
