Newcastle United star striker Alexander Isak is bracing for a significant pay reduction as the club grapples with the fallout from failing to secure Champions League qualification, amidst heightened interest from Arsenal.

Following a record-breaking £63 million move from Real Sociedad in August 2022, Isak’s future at St James’ Park hangs in the balance as Newcastle’s European aspirations dwindle. Chief executive Darren Eales hinted at the possibility of offloading key players to meet Premier League financial regulations, sparking speculation over Isak’s tenure at the club.

Isak, a fan favourite, has attracted attention from top clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona, with the Gunners reportedly designating him as their top attacking target for the upcoming transfer window. Despite Newcastle’s reluctance to part ways with the Swedish international, Isak’s contractual obligations and the allure of Champions League football could sway negotiations.

Despite Isak’s impressive goal-scoring record this season, Newcastle United face the prospect of salary reductions for players, including Isak, if Champions League qualification remains elusive. With Isak currently earning £120,000 per week, discussions regarding his future at the club are imminent, with Arsenal’s interest adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

Transfer expert Dean Jones highlighted the precarious position Newcastle finds itself in, acknowledging the challenge of retaining Isak’s loyalty amidst potential offers from Champions League-bound clubs.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It is not unusual for players to suffer a drop in wages when a team drops out of the Champions League, but that really could have a significant impact at a club like Newcastle in a moment like this.”

He added: “This is a tricky time for Newcastle because they do not want to lose him but know there is a good chance another club – who are in the Champions League and can offer a pay rise – will come in for him. He loves the club, but it would be a test of loyalty and resolve if an offer does land.”

An exclusive report from now.arsenal in March revealed that Arsenal have identified Isak as their top attacking priority for the upcoming summer transfer window. The Gunners aim to secure the services of the Swedish international over other options, including Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney.

Newcastle United, however, are expected to resist any attempts to part ways with Isak. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has long admired Isak since his time in Spain, and interest in the striker persists despite missing out on his signing previously.

Although Isak may be open to a move to the Emirates Stadium, negotiations could prove challenging due to his existing contract with Newcastle, which runs until 2028.
