Former Arsenal player Adrian Clarke has admitted that Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele will be a good addition to the team as the Gunners continue to search for a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale who is expected to leave at the end of the season.

Ramsdale lost his place to on loan goalkeeper David Raya and was tipped to make a move away from the club in January. Despite going to end the season at Arsenal, he is not expected to remain at the club with Raya’s deal becoming permanent in the summer.

Many clubs have been linked with the England international including Chelsea and Newcastle United, but it is his replacement that has gotten the club all worked up ahead of the transfer window. Three names have emerged in the last few days with Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny top of the list. Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele and Ajax goalkeeper Diant Ramaj are also on the list.

But according to Clarke on the Handbrake Off Podcast, he sees Steele as a viable option for Arsenal. Clarke emphasised Steele’s proficiency in playing out from the back, suggesting he could seamlessly fit into the Emirates setup.

“Someone like Brighton’s Steele, who is capable of playing out of the back and would be delighted to be sub goalkeeper here but is also Premier League standard, could be a suitable addition,” remarked Clarke.

While Steele may not generate headlines, his skill set aligns with the modern demands of goalkeeping, particularly in ball distribution. Despite his importance to Brighton, with 16 league appearances this season, Arsenal remains hopeful of securing his services or a similarly suited goalkeeper.

Steele’s comfort on the ball and shot-stopping abilities make him an attractive prospect for Arsenal, who seek a keeper capable of filling Ramsdale’s void and supporting David Raya in the squad.

However, prying Steele away from Brighton could prove challenging, given his value to the Seagulls. Nonetheless, Arsenal’s pursuit of a goalkeeper adept at playing from the back reflects their strategic approach to squad strengthening ahead of the new season.
