Luton Town is considering a possible termination of the current loan deal for Albert Sambi Lokonga, and the Belgian midfielder may return to Arsenal sooner than expected.

Arsenal took a risk when signing the inexperienced midfielder for £17million, but Lokonga has failed to meet initial expectations. Following poor performances upon his arrival to north London, the Belgian has been loaned to both Crystal Palace and Luton Town in the last year, but the 24 year-old hasn’t found any form whilst in England.

When Arsenal purchased the player, Lokonga was impressing at Anderlecht under current Burnley manager, Vincent Kompany. He joined the Belgian side at the tender age of ten years old, and impressed in a double pivot featuring a more experienced Josh Cullen. The manager was reportedly eager to purchase Lokonga to reform the old midfield partnership after Cullen was signed as one of Kompany’s first purchases for the clarets.

However, the midfielder secured a move just outside London, and Arsenal had hopes that the youngster would find his form in a team which were capable of giving him more opportunities. However, the Belgian sustained an injury less than a month into his spell, and to the dismay of Edwards and others around the club, Lokonga only finished his recovery earlier this month.

Since then, the midfielder featured in Luton’s narrow 2-1 loss against Manchester City, and following Marvelous Nakamba’s suspension, he started his first match in three months in the abandoned game between Luton and Bournemouth.

Despite this, according to TEAMtalk, the Hatters are considering the termination of Lokonga’s deal as they are content with their current midfielders. The side is fighting relegation as they enter the winter transfer window, and the termination of Lokonga’s deal could present new opportunities to sign a more experienced midfielder to boost their hopes of staying in the top flight.

If Lokonga returns to London, the Gunners would most likely aim to secure the midfielder a loan deal to give him much needed game-time in the latter half of the season.
