Arsenal loanee Mika Biereth decided to swap Scotland for Austria in the final week of the January transfer window as the striker made the move from Motherwell to Sturm Graz. He got off to the perfect start at his new club by scoring on his debut against Austria Wein in the OFB Cup quarter-finals.

Mika Biereth got the move to the Austrian heavyweights by smashing it in Scotland during the first half of the 2023/24 campaign. The Arsenal loanee scored six goals and recorded five assists in 14 appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

Many people see the 20-year-old’s move in January as a step up with Arsenal wanting the player to challenge himself in a more difficult league. However that hasn’t stopped the striker as he has started in Austria, like he finished in Scotland – on top form.

Biereth scored a great volley at the end of the first-half. The ball came in from the left-hand side, with a defender making a mess of the clearance and sending the ball towards the Arsenal loanee. The striker controlled the ball with one touch before firing home with the next.

Sturm Graz won the match 2-0 and progressed to the semi-finals of the competition. The Austrian side sit second in their domestic league, two points behind Red Bull Salzburg. Biereth will be hoping he can help Sturm Graz to a league title in his short stint at the club.

Despite enjoying his time in Scotland, the Arsenal man said it was an “easy decision” to swap Motherwell for Sturm Graz in January, as he believes it gives him a better chance of making it to the Arsenal first-team in the future.

Mika Biereth: “All I can do is get better and better when I’m away on loan. Hopefully I can get the opportunity when I come back to the club. Arsenal keep an eye on all my matches, and that’s good, so hopefully I can get even better when I go back.”

Arsenal signed Biereth from Fulham’s academy in 2021 and with the club in the market for a striker next summer, Mika Biereth could get a chance to prove himself in pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The people inside the club think very highly of the Danish striker, including Mikel Arteta.
