Former Arsenal defender William Gallas has raised doubts about the current Gunners squad’s ability to challenge for the Premier League title against the formidable Liverpool this season.

Gallas, who made 142 appearances for Arsenal and won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, commended Mikel Arteta but expressed concerns about the team’s mentality.

The 46-year-old did not mince his words as he indirectly criticised Arsenal after the two defeats to London rivals Fulham and West Ham in December, referring to them as ‘small clubs’ that should not have outperformed Arsenal.

In a recent interview with Genting Casino, Gallas stated, “At Arsenal, the problem is always the same. They always drop points against the teams that they should be expected to beat. They drop too many points against the small clubs. They lost against West Ham at home and then they lost against Fulham away, so that shows you that they still don’t have the right mentality when it comes to playing these clubs or don’t take these games as seriously as they should.”

Addressing Arsenal’s title aspirations, Gallas acknowledged the current five-point gap behind Liverpool and questioned the team’s strength and desire to clinch the league. He says Arsenal should overcome their historical tendency to lose points against supposedly weaker opponents. “They need to understand that to win the title, they need to beat these smaller teams.”

Despite his critical assessment of his former club, Gallas credited Mikel Arteta for the substantial improvement since taking over. He urged the club to recognise Arteta’s efforts by offering him a new contract.

“Let’s not forget where Arsenal were when Mikel Arteta came into the club. Arsenal were a mess two or three years ago. Arteta has transformed Arsenal’s form, and all of a sudden, the club is respected not only in England but around the world again.”

Ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday, Gallas said the Gunners must treat the match with utmost importance.

“This is a huge game for Arsenal,” Gallas said. “For Arsenal the message before this one is very simple. If they still want to have the hope that they can win the Premier League this season, then they can’t lose this match.

“They have to take something from this game at the Emirates on Sunday. They must try and take the three points and they will need to be at their best to do it. This is a really big game for Arsenal’s Premier League season.”
