West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus has disclosed that Arsenal made an attempt to sign him during last summer’s transfer window, shedding light on what could have been a significant transfer coup for the Gunners.

The summer of 2023 witnessed substantial activity in the transfer market for both West Ham and Arsenal, with Declan Rice’s high-profile move from the London Stadium to the Emirates Stadium in a £105 million deal dominating headlines.

Despite the departure of Rice, West Ham manager David Moyes orchestrated four signings with the proceeds, bolstering the squad with the acquisitions of Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

However, amidst this success, it has emerged that Arsenal’s pursuit of strengthening their squad extended to targeting Kudus, who has been one of West Ham’s standout performers this season.

Kudus joined West Ham for £35.6 million from Ajax in the summer of 2023, and has quickly become an important player for David Moyes, showcasing his exceptional talent throughout the season. Despite Arsenal’s interest, Kudus opted for West Ham, driven by a desire to challenge himself and embrace a new environment conducive to personal growth.

In an interview with the Guardian, Kudus revealed, “I was ready to make that step after the season I had at Ajax. I’m a player who doesn’t want to be in my comfort zone… All the clubs you mentioned (Arsenal, Brighton, and Chelsea), it’s true they were in contact. But when West Ham came, it moved fast, and I made my decision based on speaking to people around the club, their project, and how they see me as a player.”

Kudus’s decision to join West Ham has paid dividends, with the Ghanaian international making a significant impact on the pitch, contributing 14 goals and five assists in his debut season in England.
