West Ham legend Anton Ferdinand has caused a storm on social media by suggesting that Kobbie Mainoo is better than an Arsenal star at his age.

The Ferdinand’s are somewhat prone to sparking controversy online with their comments, but this comment appears to have caused more laughter and bemusement than anything else.

Speaking on ‘The Take On’ podcast, Ferdinand said that Manchester United prodigy Mainoo is better than Bukayo Saka was at his age – a take which has not gone down well among fans.

He said: “Kobbie Mainoo is an unbelievable talent. A generational talent, 100 per cent. Not just on the ball but the way he is on the pitch.

“To go from the Under-18s straight to the first team and look like he’s been there for years tells you everything about the kid. He has done that at United.

“What we are seeing right now is something we haven’t seen in a long, long time. People talk about Saka. Saka weren’t doing this in my opinion. He weren’t doing this at 18. It is the truth. What was he doing?

“He was inconsistent. Kobbie Mainoo is not inconsistent.”

This season, where Mainoo has turned 18 years old, the young star has made 20 senior club appearances, whereas Saka made 38 appearances in the season where he turned 18 years old.

During this season (2019/20), Saka also registered 16 goal involvements and, while Mainoo is far from an attacking player, many fans have pointed to this output as far greater than that of Mainoo.

One X (Twitter) user responded to the comments by saying: “I won’t take this, Saka isn’t consistent but Mainoo is consistent with few months of play? Ferdinand is crazy!”

Few would deny Mainoo’s quality but clearly Ferdinand has ruffled a few feathers, to say the least, by suggesting that the youngster has eclipsed an Saka when he was 18 years old.
