A historic triumph unfolded at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal women’s team secured a sensational 4-1 victory over reigning champions Chelsea in front of a record-breaking crowd, marking a significant shift in the Women’s Super League title race. 

Following this emphatic win, the Gunners now find themselves level on points with league leaders, Chelsea, narrowly trailing on goal difference.

The match witnessed an early strike by England forward Beth Mead, setting the stage for Arsenal’s dominance. Despite Chelsea’s brief equaliser, Arsenal maintained their commanding display, sealing the victory with goals from Amanda Ilestedt and Alessia Russo, who capped off the win with a penalty.

Reflecting on the remarkable performance, Russo expressed her awe at the monumental occasion. 

“I think as far as Sundays go, it doesn’t get much better than this. The performance was incredible, and we have the supporters to match it,” she remarked, acknowledging the overwhelming support from the fans throughout the game. “It was an incredible day.”

Russo, who netted two goals against Chelsea, credited Lia Walti for the assist in her first goal just before half-time. “It was a perfect ball through, and she did the hard work, I just had to finish it off! It was great to get two goals and the win today in front of our incredible fans.”

Maintaining the intensity in the second half, Arsenal remained steadfast against any potential Chelsea resurgence. Russo emphasised the team’s focus, acknowledging the danger of relenting against a formidable opponent like Chelsea. 

“It was so enjoyable. I think you get so much energy from people with their passion,” she remarked, highlighting the unity and determination within the team that led to their victory.

The staggering attendance of a record-breaking WSL crowd witnessed Arsenal’s dominant display, and Russo expressed her delight at providing a spectacle for the loyal supporters. 

“I hope they enjoyed that one! I say it every single time I get interviewed and asked about our fans, but they’re just the best,” she praised, acknowledging the unwavering support that fuels the team’s drive and determination.
