Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has been omitted as the Premier League unveils the nominees for the Player of the Season award, with eight standout performers making the shortlist.

Among the nominees are two players each from Arsenal and Manchester City, with Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Phil Foden, and Erling Haaland representing their respective clubs. The remaining contenders include Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer, Virgil van Dijk, and Ollie Watkins.

Notably absent from the list is Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, despite the England star leading his club’s scoring charts with 16 league goals. However, Saka has earned recognition as one of the nominees for the Young Player of the Year award.

Fans are invited to cast their votes for their preferred player, with the voting period open until noon on May 13.

As the Premier League title race heats up with less than a fortnight remaining in the season, City and Arsenal find themselves locked in a battle for top spot. Foden has enjoyed a stellar campaign, while Haaland’s goal-scoring exploits have kept City’s title hopes alive.

Arsenal’s captain, Odegaard, and Rice, who made a significant impact following his £105 million move from West Ham, round out the list of nominees. The trio of Isak, Palmer, and Watkins have been prolific in front of goal, with Liverpool’s defensive stalwart Van Dijk representing the only center-back on the list.

In a statement regarding their nominees, Arsenal highlighted Odegaard’s leadership and stellar performances throughout the campaign. “Martin has been included in the list of nominees for the second season in a row after another excellent year skippering our young side.”

While Saka may have missed out on the Player of the Season award, he has been nominated for the Young Player of the Season award alongside teammate William Saliba. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has also been nominated for the Manager of the Season award for the second season running.

The winner of the award will be announced on May 18, one day before the final round of Premier League fixtures. The public vote will be combined with the input of a panel of football experts to determine the ultimate recipient of the prestigious accolade.
