Arsenal defender, Takehiro Tomiyasu was excluded from the Japan matchday squad which beat Vietnam in their opening game of the Asia Cup earlier today. Former Liverpool midfielder, Takumi Minamino scored twice to help his side begin the competition with a 4-2 win and go top of Group D.

Surprisingly Takehiro Tomiyasu was not in the squad for Japan which caused concern amongst some Arsenal fans on whether the defender had picked up another injury. The 25-year-old has just returned from a calf problem which kept him out of action for just over a month.

The good news for Arsenal fans is that we understand Tomiyasu was left out due to a lack of match fitness. The defender trained individually this week, away from the rest of the Japan squad. He only joined in with full training on Friday for the first time.

Understandably Takehiro Tomiyasu is still not 100% fit, however the good news is there is no setback, nor another injury. Japan are just managing the Arsenal man carefully so he’s ready for the tougher games later in the tournament.

Japan have taken 26 players with them to the Asia Cup despite only 23 players allowed to be picked for each matchday squad. This means three players will miss out each game and it made sense for Takehiro Tomiyasu to miss this one considering he’s just come back from injury.

Japan’s next game in the competition comes against Iraq on Friday with Tomiyasu expected to return to the squad. Then Japan’s final group stage game comes against Indonesia the following Wednesday.
