Rio Ferdinand has expressed his astonishment at the unexpected impact made by Leandro Trossard since joining Arsenal following the Belgian’s decisive goal against Manchester United on Sunday.

Trossard emerged as the hero for the Gunners, further intensifying the pressure on Manchester City, as the 29-year-old forward found the net from close range after he was set up by Kai Havertz. His consistent performances has validated Mikel Arteta’s trust in him, with Trossard being preferred to Gabriel Martinelli on the left flank in recent matches.

Since his arrival from Brighton for an initial fee of £20 million, Trossard has showcased his ability to deliver crucial goals, scoring five times in his last seven Premier League outings for the league leaders. His impactful contributions have exceeded expectations, especially considering the earlier speculation linking Arsenal to Mykhailo Mudryk, a pursuit that ultimately fell through but proved serendipitous for the Gunners.

Reflecting on Trossard’s influence, Rio Ferdinand, speaking on FIVE after the match, admitted his surprise at the player’s pivotal role at Arsenal. He praised Trossard as a potential signing and player of the year, highlighting his consistency in delivering crucial goals and moments despite initial perceptions of him as a squad player.

“I think Trossard could be one of the signings of the year, one of the players of the year as well. He has come up with goals on a consistent basis, big goals, big moments, and no one would have thought that he was bought for those big-moment goals. Squad player, that’s it. The value that he has come with is phenomenal,” he said.

Trossard’s scoring form this season shows his value to Arsenal’s title ambition. With 12 league goals to his name, he joins the ranks of top scorers alongside Kai Havertz, despite making only 17 starts in the Premier League. His impact off the bench has been remarkable, further solidifying his status as one of Mikel Arteta and Edu’s shrewdest acquisitions.
