Arsenal legend and Invincible Ray Parlour has urged for caution as fans await the return of a star player after a serious long-term injury.

Jurrien Timber has been sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury for almost the entirety of the 2023/24 season, after suffering the injury in Arsenal’s opening weekend game at home to Nottingham Forest.

Many fans and pundits alike had expected the Dutch defender’s season to be over, but having played twice for the Gunners’ U21s side, there has been hope, verging on demands, to see the 22-year-old in action before the season’s end.

But, despite fans’ eagerness to see the return of Timber, who only joined the club last summer, in a £38m (€44m) deal from Ajax, Parlour has advised against seeing him in the senior team again this season.

Speaking to VAVEL, the three-time Premier League winner said: “It’s so important [managing his return]. With the squad fully fit, it makes sense to have Timber ready for the start of next season now. He will be raring to go, can have a good pre-season and be ready.”

Parlour continued: “It’s been a massive shame he has been out all season, but he will be ready to be stronger next season. I don’t see him appearing over the next two games, Arsenal will look to manage this as you don’t want him to not be ready for the start of next season.”

With the Gunners’ last game of the season, at home to Everton, fast approaching, it remains to be seen whether or not Timber will be risked, but all of the current signs point towards the utmost caution being taken with his recovery.
