With the January transfer window officially closed, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale finds himself at a crossroads, with speculations suggesting that his prolonged stay with the Gunners could jeopardize his England national team career.

Ramsdale, who assumed the role of Arsenal’s No 1 goalkeeper since his arrival in the summer of 2021, displacing Bernd Leno, now contends with a shift in dynamics following the loan arrival of David Raya from Brentford last summer. Raya’s stint at the Emirates has seen Ramsdale relegated to the substitutes’ bench for a significant portion of matches.

Despite initial struggles from the Spanish shot-stopper, there is widespread anticipation that Raya’s loan deal will be made permanent in the summer. This development casts doubt on Ramsdale’s future in north London, as the former Bournemouth and Sheffield United star is deemed too talented to accept a long-term role as a second-choice goalkeeper.

Back in September, talkSPORT pundit and former Aston Villa player Gabriel Agbonlahor urged Ramsdale to consider leaving Arsenal during the January transfer window to enhance his chances of securing a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for Euro 2024.

Agbonlahor expressed concerns about Ramsdale potentially missing out on the opportunity to represent England, drawing parallels with Dean Henderson’s move to Crystal Palace to secure regular playing time.

“Ramsdale will be in the horrors now,” Agbonlahor claimed. “The Euros are coming he’s thinking to himself I’ve just played for England I’ve got a chance now. Now he probably won’t even get on the plane.

“Dean Henderson left Manchester United and has gone to Crystal Palace and he’s got a task to get Sam Johnstone out of the side. He has to go and play somewhere, it’s as simple as that.

“We said it about [Kalvin] Phillips and [Harry] Maguire and these players but I mean Ramsdale, you’d be devastated. He got his team into the Champions League he played a big part of it but football is heartless.”

Despite reported interest from clubs like Chelsea and Bayern Munich before the January transfer window closed, Ramsdale remains an Arsenal player. The decision to stay puts his playing time at risk, especially if Raya maintains fitness and holds onto the starting position.

Ramsdale’s role in Arsenal’s lineup for the remainder of the season remains uncertain, but with only five league appearances to his name this season, England manager Gareth Southgate may have reservations about selecting him for international duty. The goalkeeper’s decision to stay at Arsenal could potentially impact his aspirations for a place in the national squad for Euro 2024.
