Peter Schmeichel expressed bewilderment at the reception received by Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus during the match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The match between Arsenal and Manchester City ended in a goalless draw on Sunday afternoon, with both teams struggling to capitalise on scoring opportunities in the final third.

Despite Arsenal’s recent struggles at the Etihad, manager Mikel Arteta would likely consider the point gained as valuable. However, he might be concerned about the team’s lack of cutting edge in attack, with Gabriel Jesus being one of the players who had opportunities to make an impact during the match before being substituted in the 72nd minute.

Jesus returned to the starting XI following recent struggles with injuries to take the place of compatriot Leandro Trossard and compatriot Gabriel Martinelli on the left side of the attack. As Jesus left the pitch to be replaced by Leandro Trossard, some sections of the Manchester City supporters could be heard booing the Brazilian forward, a response that left Schmeichel puzzled.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Schmeichel questioned the rationale behind the fans’ reaction, stating, “I don’t get why the Man City crowd are booing Gabriel Jesus, he didn’t ask to leave. It’s just what happens. They should be applauding him. He did a lot here.”

Jesus had been a significant contributor to City’s success under manager Pep Guardiola, winning four Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad. Despite his departure to Arsenal in search of regular playing time, Jesus’ contributions to City’s achievements were noteworthy.

The reception Jesus received from the City crowd might have seemed harsh, considering his contributions to the club’s success. Nevertheless, applause from certain sections of the crowd as Jesus left the pitch indicated a mixed reaction from the fans.
