Former Arsenal player and current Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson has named a midfielder in Mikel Arteta’s squad that is better than England international James Maddison.

Maddison is without doubt one of the best midfielders in the English Premier League and was enjoying a stellar start to life at Tottenham Hotspur before he sustained injury in the 4-1 defeat against Chelsea at the beginning of November 2023.

Maddison has been a major miss since his ankle injury and the team’s results could have been a lot different in November and early December if it wasn’t for the setback.

As Maddison nears a comeback, Paul Merson has weighed in on the debate of who is the better player between him and Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard.

Both Odegaard and Maddison are recognized as top-tier attacking midfielders in the Premier League, contributing significantly to their respective teams.

Despite not hitting top form this season when compared to the last, Odegaard has scored four goals and provided three assists in 18 Premier League matches. Additionally, he has scored two goals in five UEFA Champions League appearances this season.

Maddison, who joined Tottenham from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, made a strong impact before suffering an injury. His performances for Spurs were fantastic , showcasing his attacking prowess as Spurs flourished in the Premier League until the unfortunate injury.

While Merson did not explicitly state his preference between Odegaard and Maddison, the comparison between the two suggests the challenging task of choosing the better player.

Merson’s comment adds an interesting dimension to the ongoing discussions about the strengths and contributions of these talented attacking midfielders in the Premier League.

In a tweet on his verified X handle, Merson wrote ” Maddison is not better than Odegaard. ”

In comparison, Maddison has made 174 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. He has scored 46 goals and provided 37 assists in those games, while Odegaard has made 105 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. The playmaker has scored 27 goals and given 16 assists in those games.
