Following defeats to Arsenal and Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title this season, Paul Merson has drawn parallels between the struggles of the Reds and the Gunners, suggesting a shared problem in converting opportunities into goals.

Arsenal had the opportunity to open a two-point lead at the top following Liverpool’s defeat, but Mikel Arteta also saw his team beaten at home by Aston Villa, leaving both teams trailing Manchester City with six matches remaining before the end of the season.

Like Liverpool missing glaring chances in the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, Arsenal also struggled to score against Aston Villa, with Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard all guilty of missing good opportunities in the first half.

Paul Merson, speaking on Sky Sports’ post-match coverage, highlighted the striking similarity between Liverpool and Arsenal in terms of their goal-scoring woes. Merson expressed disappointment in both clubs’ inability to match Manchester City’s firepower, particularly lacking a prolific goal scorer like Erling Haaland.

Addressing the issue, Merson stated the importance of clinical finishing, lamenting missed opportunities that could prove costly in the long run. He stressed the need for a natural goal scorer, citing it as a shared problem for both Liverpool and Arsenal.

“They can’t keep falling behind,” Merson said. “What Jamie said before with 23 games, you can’t keep on doing that.

“Salah here, it hits his toe, I mean any other time you just roll that into the corner, it’s bad finishing you know and it looks like it’s going to come back to bite them.

“They aint got a natural goalscorer, that’s Arsenal’s problem as well, I hope that’s not going to be Arsenal’s thing that comes back to bite them in the end.

“You know Man City have got a natural goalscorer and they’re top of the league at the moment. So I’m disappointed for Liverpool, I feel sorry for them.”
