Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has poured cold water on speculation suggesting that his ex-club could derail the chances of Arsenal winning the Premier League title, instead tipping the Gunners to triumph in a crucial showdown at Old Trafford.

Arsenal, eyeing their first league title since 2004, maintained the heat on Manchester City with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in a high-stakes north London derby.

Responding swiftly, Manchester City, aiming to etch their name in history as the first team to secure four consecutive Premier League titles, secured a 2-0 triumph against Nottingham Forest in a late kick-off.

With just one point separating Arsenal from Manchester City at the top of the table, the Premier League crown hangs precariously. Manchester City could clinch the title by winning their remaining four fixtures.

To keep the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s men, Arsenal aim to bag nine points from their last three games, including clashes against Bournemouth and Everton at home, sandwiching a visit to Manchester United.

While the encounter at Old Trafford appears to be Arsenal’s sternest test on paper, Hargreaves remains unconvinced of Manchester United’s ability to disrupt Arsenal’s march.

“They can be anything, United, it’s mad,” remarked Hargreaves on Premier League Productions. “Even at home to Burnley, it was Burnley who had more possession.”

Despite the potential for a counter-attacking game, Hargreaves understands Mikel Arteta’s adeptness at devising strategies to neutralise opponents. He expressed confidence in Arsenal’s midfield prowess, anchored by Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, foreseeing a challenging encounter for Manchester United.

“That game might suit United because they’ll be able to play on the counter and hit them on the break.

“But Mikel Arteta does such a great job in formulating game-plans to nullify those threats so I think Arsenal will beat Man United.

“United can’t control games, the middle of the pitch is so open and Arsenal’s midfield is brilliant with [Martin] Odegaard and [Declan] Rice. So I don’t see United troubling Arsenal.”
