Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has lauded Arsenal defensive duo, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, as two of the Premier League’s standout defenders.

Vidic, renowned for his own defensive prowess during his illustrious spell at Old Trafford, hailed the young Arsenal pair as instrumental in the Gunners’ quest for defensive solidity this season.

Throughout his eight-year tenure at Manchester United, Vidic won five Premier League titles and earned two Player of the Year awards, establishing himself as one of the league’s finest centre-backs. His wealth of experience and expertise in defensive matters lends credence to his evaluation of the current crop of defenders.

Saliba and Gabriel’s contributions have not gone unnoticed, with Arsenal boasting one of the league’s best defensive records this campaign. The defensive partnership has been key in limiting opposition attacks, conceding only 28 goals and registering an impressive 18 clean sheets thus far. Vidic commended their performance against Manchester City, where they effectively neutralised prolific striker Erling Haaland, highlighting their defensive tenacity and partnership as key strengths.

“I like talking about the young ones. Micky van de Ven [at Tottenham Hotspur]. He’s fast, strong and good in the air, and has capabilities to really improve. The two from Arsenal [William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes] are doing well,” Vidic remarked to The Times.

“Watching them, I feel they like defending and want the clean sheet. I like the mentality they show. And they are a partnership. That is important. Arsenal, this season, have not been conceding many goals.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta echoed Vidic’s sentiments, praising his defensive duo’s outstanding performance against Manchester City. Following the match, Arteta emphasised the team’s commitment, discipline, and competitive spirit, particularly in securing a clean sheet against the reigning champions.

“Huge – it’s extremely difficult to do that but that tells you the commitment of every player, the discipline that they showed and how they compete,” Arteta remarked. “One thing is to play a football match and the other is to compete [in] it. Against this team, we did that today really, really well. It was a thrilling game, a really tough match, a very demanding opponent but I think we competed really well. Defensively, I think we were outstanding.”
