Arsenal are poised to secure their seventh consecutive victory as they face off against Sheffield United, who currently languish at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Despite being the favourites, Mikel Arteta has stressed the importance of earning the win rather than taking it for granted.

The Gunners maintained their flawless start to league football in 2024 with a commanding 4-1 triumph over Newcastle United last weekend, further fueling their momentum. In contrast, Sheffield United, under Chris Wilder, has only managed one win in their last 11 fixtures and has struggled at Bramall Lane, securing victory just twice all season.

Arteta acknowledges the potential for Arsenal to bolster their goal difference on paper but underscores the necessity for his team to maintain their recent stellar performances to secure maximum points. He warns against underestimating Sheffield United, citing their resilience and tactical prowess.

“First of all, you have to earn the right to win the games,” he said. “We want to be ruthless and efficient in front of goal and I think lately we’ve been really good.

“With every team we look at the weaknesses and the strengths and try to take the game to the opponent, but I’m saying this because I know [Sheffield United] really well. I analysed them many years ago and the things that Chris did, and I learned from his teams. I’m telling you, it’s going to be a really tough match.”

Arsenal’s recent scoring spree highlights their offensive power, having netted 25 goals while conceding only 3 in their six Premier League matches this year. This remarkable run places them among the few teams with an extended winning streak at the start of a calendar year in the league’s history.

Conversely, Sheffield United’s defensive frailties are evident, having conceded five goals in each of their last three home matches and managing just one clean sheet all season.

Despite the apparent mismatch, Arteta remains cautious, wary of Sheffield United’s potential to upset the odds. He praises Wilder’s coaching and expects a challenging encounter on Monday night.

“They’re a really difficult team to beat,” he said speaking in his pre-match press conference. “I’ve watched four or five games now with the City game, the way they started against Villa, and then obviously the game took a different route, but they are extremely well coached.

“I know Chris really well and I admire his teams, a lot of things that he does with them. It will be Monday night football and it’s going to be a tough night.”

Acknowledging the importance of the three points at stake, Arteta stresses the need for focus and determination from his players to maintain their position in the title race alongside Liverpool and Manchester City.

“I imagine that it’s really tough for them and their ambitions are different but it’s really important. I imagine when you are there you want to get out of there as quickly as possible and we have a lot to play for as well. It’s a big game for us.”
