Mikel Arteta has hinted at the possibility of Aaron Ramsdale staying at Arsenal amid transfer links to Newcastle United.

Despite losing his place as the Gunners’ No 1 goalkeeper to David Raya this season, Arteta believes there is a big possibility that Ramsdale will remain at the Emirates Stadium for the upcoming season.

Rumours of interest from Newcastle have been circulating, but Arteta did not confirm or deny these speculations. Ramsdale’s future at Arsenal came into question with the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford last summer. With Raya expected to make his move permanent for £27 million at the end of the season, it was widely speculated that Ramsdale would be on the move. However, Arteta’s comments suggest that there is a possibility of Ramsdale staying put at Arsenal.

Asked about interest from Newcastle in Ramsdale, Arteta said: “I’m not going to comment on those things”.

The Arsenal manager was then pressed if there was any suggestion that Ramsdale could still be at the club next season, replying: “Suggestion? There is a big reality that Aaron is here because he is our player and has a contract.”

The 25-year-old signed a new contract last year, extending his stay until the summer of 2026 with the option to further extend by another 12 months. Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 in a deal worth an initial £24 million, potentially rising to £30 million. Despite losing his starting spot to Raya this season, Ramsdale has shown promise and was even called up to the England squad for World Cup qualifiers.

Arteta’s reluctance to comment on the Newcastle interest in Ramsdale and his assertion that the goalkeeper is an Arsenal player with a contract in place imply that the club values him. The manager’s words indicate that Ramsdale is part of his plans for the future at Arsenal. It remains to be seen if Newcastle will pursue their interest in Ramsdale further or if the goalkeeper will indeed stay at Arsenal for the upcoming season.

While there were reports linking Ramsdale to Wolves around the January transfer window, Arteta’s statements seemingly reaffirm his commitment to keeping the goalkeeper at the Emirates. Ramsdale’s performances and potential indicate that he could continue to be a key player for Arsenal moving forward. His inclusion in the England squad also speaks to his quality and development during his time at the club.
