Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lauded the important role played by goalkeeper David Raya in securing a crucial 2-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night.

Goals from Leandro Trossard and Martin Odegaard sealed the three points for Arsenal at Molineux, propelling them back to the summit of the Premier League table.

Despite facing a resilient Wolves side beset by injuries, Arsenal endured a tense encounter, with Wolves fashioning several scoring opportunities. One standout moment occurred in the first half when Joao Gomes threatened Arsenal’s defence, only for Raya to produce a vital save, diverting Gomes’ powerful effort onto the post.

Reflecting on the significance of Raya’s save, Arteta emphasised its impact on the game’s trajectory. “Very crucial, because we didn’t concede anything up to that point,” Arteta remarked in his post-match press conference. “We had some very open situations that would have changed the game for sure. David was outstanding in that moment to make the save that we needed and then we took advantage.

“I think he’s been very consistent throughout the whole season. The numbers are proof of that. I think the timing of the first goal was really helpful as well. Really happy.”

Arteta commended Raya’s consistent performance throughout the season, highlighting his instrumental role in Arsenal’s defensive solidity. With 13 clean sheets in the Premier League, Raya has emerged as a standout performer, surpassing his peers in goalkeeping prowess.

Arsenal’s defensive resilience has been underscored by Raya’s contributions, culminating in a new club record of six consecutive away league clean sheets. The Gunners now aim to match the Premier League record of seven away clean sheets, a feat currently held by Chelsea and Manchester United.

Looking ahead, Arteta expressed confidence in his team’s ability to maintain their defensive excellence as they prepare to face fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in upcoming fixtures. “That’s a very difficult thing to do as a team and especially in this league,” Arteta remarked on the defensive milestone. “Let’s do it.”
