In a recent press conference, Mikel Arteta opened up about an Arsenal signing he made that was considered controversial, expressing his current satisfaction with the decision.

The 41-year-old manager addressed the topic during his press conference on Friday, shedding light on the controversial move that has since garnered approval.

Arteta’s remarks centered on the signing of England international Aaron Ramsdale, who joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in a £24 million deal back in August 2021.

At the time, not everyone welcomed Ramsdale’s arrival with enthusiasm, but Arteta now speaks positively about the decision, despite subsequently favoring David Raya in the current season.

Reflecting on the initial skepticism surrounding Ramsdale’s transfer, Arteta emphasized his pleasure with the outcome. “I’m really happy with the call we made as a club to sign him because it was very controversial to start with,” he stated. “We helped a lot to change his career in a really powerful way, and I’m really happy he came here and has done what he has done for us so far,” he added, as quoted by Hayters TV.

Ramsdale himself acknowledged the initial discontent among Arsenal supporters upon his arrival at the Emirates Stadium in May 2023. However, he swiftly proved his worth by displacing Bernd Leno and establishing himself as a key player under Arteta, even earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year last season.

Despite Arteta’s praise for Ramsdale, the English goalkeeper has found himself playing second fiddle to Raya this season, with Raya making 22 Premier League starts compared to Ramsdale’s five.

With Raya ineligible to play against parent club Brentford this weekend due to loan regulations, Ramsdale may be poised to make what could potentially be his final appearance for Arsenal.

Reports suggest that Ramsdale is attracting interest from Chelsea and Newcastle, and there have been indications that Arsenal would be willing to sell if he expresses a desire to leave.

Consequently, despite Arteta’s positive sentiments, Ramsdale’s future at Arsenal appears uncertain, with his tenure potentially drawing to a close.
