Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defied calls for a new striker, asserting his belief in the current squad’s capabilities. The Gunners fell short against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final and raised questions about the team’s attacking strength.

The second leg clash ended in a 1-0 defeat for Arsenal, sealing a 3-2 aggregate loss and highlighting deficiencies in their offensive strategy. Despite opportunities in both legs, Arteta’s side failed to capitalise, reigniting debates about the necessity of a prolific goal scorer to elevate Arsenal’s trophy prospects.

In a post-match interview, former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel confronted Arteta about the team’s elimination, suggesting it stemmed from the absence of a “proper striker.” However, Arteta countered, emphasising Arsenal’s status as one of the Premier League’s highest-scoring teams and downplaying the importance of a single goal-scoring figure.

When pressed about not having a reliable goalscorer and the team being reliant on goals from multiple positions, Arteta replied: “No, I don’t think so because we’re the team that’s scored more goals in the Premier League and you’re talking about like this.”

“From everywhere, and we have to, because the reality is we don’t have a striker who is going to score 35, 40 goals – and we have to live with that.

“We have many other qualities. And today’s the day to stick behind the players because they have given us so much, they have taken us on this journey and we still have the Premier League to play.”

Despite ongoing speculation linking Arsenal with various strikers, including Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, financial constraints and Arteta’s apparent acceptance of the team’s current situation suggest a summer signing might not materialise.

Despite Arteta dismissing the notion of bringing in a new striker, Arsenal have reportedly met with some representatives to discuss a potential deal about their clients. There are going to be departures from the club at the end of the season and it is expected that the Gunners will make up the numbers with quality additions.
