As Arsenal prepares up to face German giant Bayern Munich in Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter-final first leg, both Kai Havertz and Declan Rice find themselves walking a precarious tightrope.

The match, set to take place at the Emirates Stadium, will see exclusive attendance from Gunners fans, as Bayern supporters have been banned by UEFA due to incidents during the previous round against Lazio.

Despite Arsenal’s favourable league form making them favourites for the clash, progressing to the last four is expected to be a challenging endeavour. Ahead of kick-off, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta faces a dilemma, with two key players, Havertz and Rice, teetering on the brink of suspension. A single yellow card for either player during Tuesday’s match would render them ineligible for the second leg at the Allianz Arena.

The prospect of facing the German giants without Havertz and Rice is a daunting one for Arsenal supporters. However, Bayern Munich confronts a similar predicament, with Alphonso Davies and Leon Goretzka also at risk of missing the return leg on March 17 if they receive yellow cards.

It’s worth noting that all accumulated yellow cards are cleared after the quarter-final stage to prevent players from missing the final due to disciplinary issues. Yellow cards have been a particular concern for Havertz this season, despite his otherwise impressive debut campaign for Arsenal. The German international has accrued eight yellow cards in the Premier League and 11 in all competitions.

While Havertz managed to avoid booking during Arsenal’s recent 3-0 victory away at Brighton which would have seen him miss matches against Brighton Aston Villa. Arteta expressed surprise at his player’s disciplinary record. “Yeah we have to be careful. Hopefully he won’t get booked again because we know what happens with the 10th.”
