Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has surprised many with his astonishing physical transformation since his retirement from professional football in March 2023.

Ozil was heavily criticised during his time while playing active football but is now almost unrecognisable following his physical transformation.

Ozil’s legacy at Arsenal is a blend of brilliance and occasional frustration. His arrival in a £42.4 million deadline day transfer from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 was heralded as a turning point in the club’s recent history. The German playmaker played an important role in ending Arsenal’s trophy drought, contributing to the FA Cup triumph in 2014 while also winning the trophy three more times during his tenure.

While Ozil was hailed as a creative genius capable of unlocking defenses at will, his career was not without criticism. Niggling injury issues and perceived inconsistency in big matches often drew scrutiny. Former Gunners defender Martin Keown, in particular, openly criticised Ozil’s work rate after a defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final.

Keonwn said: “He wasn’t fit to wear the shirt for me tonight. He isn’t giving everything and there is a lot more under the bonnet.”

Despite the criticism, Ozil’s former teammate, Tomas Rosicky, defended him, saying that Ozil was a hard worker both in games and during training. Rosicky highlighted the importance of seeing things in perspective.

“I know Mesut very well. I played a lot of games with him. If you always see his stats, he is not the one who is not working,” said Rosicky.

“Obviously what the people maybe lack with him, mainly in England, is that he is not the one who is going into the tackles or something like that. But if you see it in general – he is working hard. You can see his stats, what he has every game.

“Obviously I don’t know about this season [as I am not playing or training with him], but that’s what he used to be like and he was a hard worker – even in training. I know him. You have to see things in perspective, he is someone who can decide the game by himself.”

Recently, Ozil, now 35, teased a potential return to football through a training video posted on his Instagram account. The montage showcased Ozil using battle ropes and pushing a weighted sled in a gym, revealing a markedly muscular physique compared to his playing career.

The caption accompanying the post read, ‘Always stay ready, then you don’t need to get ready,’ followed by an hourglass emoji, fueling speculation about his possible return. Support for Ozil’s transformation poured in from former teammates and football personalities, with Antonio Rudiger labeling him a ‘beast’ and Rio Ferdinand noting his ‘strong’ appearance.

During his eight-year spell at Arsenal, Ozil made over 250 appearances, winning four FA Cups and notching 19 assists in the 2015-16 Premier League season, a club record that still stands. After leaving Arsenal, Ozil spent time with Fenerbahce and Istanbul Basaksehir before officially retiring from professional football in March.
