Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard, has committed to a new long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.
Odegaard is the latest player to be awarded with a long-term contract following new deals for Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, William Saliba, Reiss Nelson and Bukayo Saka.
The Norwegian international midfielder has been an integral part of Arsenal’s squad since his arrival on loan from Real Madrid in January 2021. After an impressive campaign last season, during which he contributed 15 goals, all in the Premier League, and earned widespread acclaim, Odegaard’s decision to extend his stay at the club comes as a significant boost for Arsenal.
In recognition of his exceptional performances in the 2022/23 season, Odegaard earned a spot in the PFA Team of the Year and received nominations for the Premier League Player of the Season, Premier League Young Player of the Season, and the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year awards. He also clinched the Premier League Player of the Month award for November/December 2022.
The 24-year-old midfielder has continued to shine in the current season, playing a pivotal role for Arsenal. He has already notched up three goals in seven appearances across all competitions, including a standout strike in Arsenal’s recent 4-0 Champions League victory over PSV Eindhoven.
Odegaard expressed his delight regarding the contract extension, stating, “Signing a new contract was a really easy decision for me for lots of reasons. Mainly what we are doing right now as a club is special, and I want to be a part of that. I’m really excited for what’s to come here. I’ve found a place where I can be really settled and call my home.”
He further added, “My story is a bit different maybe, as I moved around different clubs since I was 16. At Arsenal, since the first day, I’ve felt great, and this is definitely my home now.”
Arsenal Sporting Director, Edu, praised Odegaard’s qualities and expressed his delight at securing the midfielder’s long-term commitment.
He said, “Martin is still only 24 years old, so there’s still much more to come from him, and we’re delighted that we will be together in the forthcoming years.”
Manager, Mikel Arteta, echoed the sentiment, stating, “Martin signing a new long-term contract is such good news for everyone connected with Arsenal. He is our captain and a hugely respected person at our club, who is a great role model and professional, bringing quality and maturity in everything he does.”
Arteta expressed his joy at working with Odegaard, both on and off the pitch, and emphasized the player’s consistent contributions at the highest level.
“We all look forward to continuing our journey with Martin in the years to come.”
