Following Arsenal hard-fought goalless draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, captain Martin Odegaard showered praise on defender William Saliba for his standout performance in the Premier League clash.

Despite being labeled as underdogs, Arsenal defied expectations and held their ground against Pep Guardiola’s formidable side, ultimately securing a valuable point. The defensive resilience displayed by the Gunners played a crucial role in thwarting City’s attacking threats, with Saliba emerging as the standout performer.

Saliba’s stellar statistics speak volumes about his impact on the game, winning 100 percent of his ground duels, making eight ball recoveries, five clearances, and winning five tackles against City. Odegaard wasted no time in acknowledging Saliba’s contribution, describing him as a “brilliant player” and expressing gratitude for his presence in the team.

“We want all the three points, we tried the best to get the win but in the end we couldn’t do enough and we take the point. Any team in the world would miss Saliba, we’re lucky to have him – glad he’s fit, brill performance and a brilliant player.”

He added: “We had to defend a lot deeper than we planned, we were dangerous in moments on counters. It’s hard when you defend for a while and legs are heavy. In the moments we took the ball we were dangerous I felt we could have won the game – it was a tight one. It’s a long way to go so much can happen before the end of the season. We’ll take it day by day and game by game, we’ll see.”

The French defender’s absence last season due to a back problem was felt by the club, contributing to a dip in form during the season run-in. However, Saliba has returned fully fit and firing on all cylinders this season, forming a formidable partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes at the heart of Arsenal’s defense.

Reflecting on the draw, Saliba expressed a desire for more than just a point, with the need to maintain focus and ambition for the remaining matches of the season. With Arsenal maintaining their position ahead of City and trailing Liverpool by two points, Saliba highlighted the team’s defensive resilience and urged continued focus on upcoming fixtures.

“It was a tough game against a big team, we are not satisfied 100 per cent, but it’s okay, we take the point,” Saliba said. “We know it’s not easy to come here and not concede, and we did well.”

“We can be proud of stopping them from scoring, but it’s not finished, there are nine games still and we have to win them. We are so good this season defensively,” Saliba noted. “It’s not only the defenders, it’s all the team, so we can be proud of this and we have to keep going and focus on the next game. We are already focused on the next game. We don’t have the choice. We have to be ready.”
