Arsenal and Martin Odegaard fell to their first league defeat of 2024 on Sunday, which in turn lead to their title chances taking a huge blow. Aston Villa picked up all three points at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal fans left wondering what went wrong.

Mikel Arteta’s decision to take off captain, Martin Odegaard in the second-half when the game was level has since come under huge scrutiny following the defeat.

The Norwegian was by far Arsenal’s best player in the first-half and if anyone was going to unlock the Aston Villa defence, then it was going to be Martin Odegaard. However he didn’t get the opportunity with Emile Smith Rowe taking his place for the final 20 minutes of the match.

In his post-match press conference Mikel Arteta explained, albeit briefly, why Odegaard was substituted: “He had a leg issue, that’s why he was taken off.”

With the Champions League quarter-final second-leg in just two days time, Arsenal fans will be fearing the worst about whether their captain will be fit enough for the game at the Allianz Arena.

However according to Norwegian football fan Sebastien Pedersen, Arsenal fans have little to worry about when it comes to Martin Odegaard making the game against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Sebastien Pedersen wrote on Twitter: “Martin Odegaard told VG Sporten he was fine when he met them in the elevator after the game.”

It appears Martin Odegaard doesn’t agree with Mikel Arteta on the reason he was substituted against Aston Villa.

However a positive injury update on the club captain will be a huge relief for Arsenal fans, especially ahead of Wednesday night’s huge fixture. The Gunners go into the game off the back of a 2-2 draw in the first-leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Martin Odegaard has been one of Arsenal’s most important players this season. That was illustrated in the previous round in the Champions League when he helped unlock the Porto defence to provide an assist for Leandro Trossard to get Arsenal back level in the tie.

He’ll be looking to do something similar on Wednesday night with Mikel Arteta looking for a big reaction from his team.

Martin Odegaard being fit is a big boost for the Gunners. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich will be without Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane and Alphonso Davies.
