Manchester United legend Andy Cole has levelled accusations against Mikel Arteta, alleging mistreatment of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who has fallen out of favour at Arsenal.

Ramsdale, who started the season as Arsenal’s No.1 goalkeeper, quickly found himself displaced by David Raya following his arrival from Brentford. Despite Arteta’s initial claims of rotating between Ramsdale and Raya throughout the season, Raya has solidified his position as the undisputed first choice.

With Ramsdale making only two Premier League appearances since Raya’s debut in September, his future at Arsenal seems uncertain. Cole, who began his career at Arsenal, believes Ramsdale has been unfairly treated and misled by Arteta, urging him to consider his options at the end of the season.

Cole told Betfred: “Nine times out of ten, when a player moves to a different club, they’re meant to be their new club’s number one centre-forward, centre-half, goalkeeper or whatever it may be.

“I think he’s been hard done by, I really do. He was so good for Arsenal last season and then all of a sudden, Mikel Arteta has gone out and got a new goalkeeper and initially claimed that he had two number ones, which was complete nonsense from day one.

Cole criticised Arteta’s handling of the situation, stating, “The way he’s disregarded Ramsdale has been really disrespectful. He’s mugged him off basically.”

Cole expressed confidence in Ramsdale’s abilities, suggesting that if he moves on from Arsenal, he would excel at a club like Newcastle United. “If Aaron makes the move, he will be Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper.”

In response to questions about Ramsdale’s future, Arteta emphasised the importance of focusing on the present season, deferring discussions about contracts until later. Reflecting on the decision to sign Ramsdale, Arteta expressed satisfaction with the club’s choice, indicating a positive personal connection with the goalkeeper.

“Now is the season, now is tomorrow, now is what we have done today and how can we improve tomorrow,’ Arteta said. ‘And those talks are for much after, I think. The connection on a personal level goes two ways pretty much and I’m really happy that we made the call as a club to sign him.”
